Quality vs Quantity

I believe in my current WIP, but the really interesting thing is that I can't seem to get the words out. I sit down to write and only 500 words come out. After thinking it through, I realized that it's okay. Writing 500-1500 words a day is perfectly fine.

It's quality vs quantity.

With Guardians, I wrote at least 2k a day and finished it in a month, so I get the quantity thing. Every word I write though on this new WIP- I want it to be just the right word, just the right phrasing.

Quality. CP (this WIP) is all about quality writing and I like it like that.

What do you guys think? Do you tend to sway toward quality or quantity?

  1. I'm quantity on the first draft, but quality on revisions. But I can rarely pass 1,500 words on any one project in a day. That's why I tend to work on more than one project at any given time.

  2. Mine is taking me forever, so I'm HOPING that it's quality!

  3. Certainly not quantity, seeing as how I failed NaNo... :P

  4. I write best in a pressure situation, so I punch out my WIP during NaNo, then spend Jan-June editing/revising so that Aug-Oct I can start brainstorming on a new book. How people can write more than 1 book a year amazes me! So, I suppose at first, I am quantity over quality!

  5. When I wrote my first book I was going all out for quantity as it was part of NaNo 2009. With my second book, I wrote it over a longer period of time and concentrated on the quality more, to avoid the editing being such hard work afterwards. Nice to meet you - I am from the Write Campaign.

  7. I set daily word count goals when I'm going full force on a novel, but I think you need to do what feels right for the project. Some are more emotionally exhausting than others. Some require more pondering time. Good luck!

(And hi from the campaign trail.)

  8. I'm more quality. My first novel was all about quantity and how many words I could get out. Thanks for sharing.

  9. If I focus on quality in the first draft, nothing gets finished. To stop self-editing when I'm writing was hard for me, but I've finished way more since I learned to say, "I can fix that later."

  10. Do what works for you! I don't like to push writing because when I do it is awful. Quality matters most because I don't like, okay I HATE, revisions. There I said it. *looking upwards for the lightening bolt*

  11. It's quality for me. 250, 500 or 2000 words, I have to feel good about what I wrote on any day.I've never understood the "quantity" thing. I'll bet a good deal of it ends up in the bit bucket if it ever gets picked up by a Pub.. Glad to hear someone else feels the same way!
